The Hawaiian dictionary defines the word 'paikauhale' [ˈpəiˈkəuˈhale] as "going from house to house, in search of pleasure or entertainment", and also as "homeless wanderer, who alternates between various host sites". In China, this star was known as 心 宿 三 (Xīn Xiù sān), 'The Third Star of the Heart'.
Paikauhale is a a blue-white main sequence dwarf star of spectral type B0 V, with a surface temperature of 29850 K. It has a rotation speed of 24 km/s.
Photometric observations were carried out in May 2000 and in the year 2003.

The star Paikauhale reminds de cuality of the Sun and the Moon during its passage through the perigee (in opposition to the Black Moon).
