The traditional name 'Shaula' derives from the Arabic الشولاء 'al-šawlā'', which means 'the raised tail (of the scorpion)'. In China she was known as 宿 八 (Wěi Xiù bā), 'the eighth star in the tail'.
Shaula is a blue-white subgigant star of spectral type B2 IV, with a surface temperature of 25000 K. It has a rotation speed of 150 km/s.
It is a system formed by 2 components.
Photometric observations were carried out in the years 2004 and 2006.
