In the Guanche mythology of the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), the star Canopus was associated with the goddess Chaxiraxi, and later, with the arrival of Christianity, with the Virgin of Candelaria (also known as 'La morenita' because of the color of her skin), which spread rapidly throughout South America, during the New World era.
