The traditional name 'Xuange' derives from the Chinese 玄 戈 'Xuángē', which means 'sombre lance', because this star marks itself and is alone in the asterism 'Forbidden Purple Enclosure'. This star is also part of the Arab asterism ألعولد ألذعب 'Al Aulād al dhiʼb', which means 'hyena cubs'.
Xuange is a white main sequence dwarf star of spectral type A3 V, with a surface temperature of 8720 K. It has a rotation speed of 100 km/s.
Photometric observations were carried out in February 2001, November 2002, December 2006 and March 2009.

The star Xuange reminds the planets Mars, Saturn and Uranus. The symbolic image 'sombre lance' refers to dangers that must be seriously considered. The symbolic image 'hyena cubs' refers to the inevitable confrontations of these animals with other predators (with an inequality emphasized by the fact of being puppies), due to their habits of satiating themselves in their slaughter. Depending on the area, striped hyenas can fury battles with other species of hyenas, wolves, lions, cheetahs and leopards among others, although they do not usually end in death.
