The traditional name 'Thuban' derives from the Arabic word ثعبان 'thu'bān', meaning 'dragon or large snake'.

Thuban is a white bright gigant star of spectral type AO III, with a surface temperature of 10100 K.

It is a system formed by 2 components.

Photometric observations were carried out in the years 2004, 2009 and 2016.

It is a system formed by 2 components. Due to its proximity to the ecliptic, it can be occulted by the Moon, and very rarely by planets (Venus occulted it on October 25, 1947).

Photometric observations were carried out in the year 2014 and May 2010.
