Shaula [laSco], impressive determination to face evil

Shaula [Lambda Scorpii, laSco, λ Sco] is the 2nd brightest star in the constellation Scorpius (the Scorpion), with a visual magnitude of +1,62. It is located at a distance of 570 light years from the solar system.

The traditional name 'Shaula' derives from the Arabic الشولاء 'al-šawlā'', which means 'the raised tail (of the scorpion)'. In China she was known as 宿 八 (Wěi Xiù bā), 'the eighth star in the tail'.

 
Shaula is a blue-white subgigant star of spectral type B2 IV, with a surface temperature of 25000 K. It has a rotation speed of 150 km/s.

It is a system formed by 2 components.

Photometric observations were carried out in the years 2004 and 2006.

Position in relation to the ecliptic:

  • Longitude: 264.9º (24º51' Sagittarius)
  • Latitude: -13.8º (16º12' Pisces; semitrecil@13º51', 0º03' orb).

Position in relation to the celestial equator:

  • Right ascension: 263.4º (23º24' 9th House; (quadra)quincile 96º, 0º36' orb)
  • Declination: -37.1º (22º54' 11th House)

Shaula is a star that reminds the quality of the planet Saturn. The symbolic image 'the raised tail of the scorpion' refers to a position of imminent attack.
