The traditional name Aldulfin derives from the Arabic 'Oanab Ad-Dulfīn' or 'Dzaneb al Delphin', which was translated into Latin as 'Cauda Delphini', which means 'the tail of the dolphin'. In China it was known as 敗 瓜 'Bài Guā yī', which means 'the first star of rotten gourd'.
Aldulfin is a white-blue giant star of spectral type B6III, with a surface temperature of 13600 K. It has a radius 4.6 times greater than the Sun, and a luminosity about 670 times greater. It has a rotation speed of 52 km/s.
