Betelgeuse [alOri], ability to initiate large-scale projects

Betelgeuse [Alfa Orionis, alOri, α Ori] is a red supergiant star type, located in the constellation of Orion. It is the 9th brightest star in the sky, with an absolute magnitude of -5.5. It is located 640 light years from Earth. Its mass is about 20 times that of the Sun and its size about 600 times greater. If it was located at the center of our solar system, its size would extend beyond the orbit of Mars.

At the end of its life, Betelgeuse will explode as a supernova of type II.

It is surrounded by a complex nebula, formed by silicates and galactic dust, expelled by the star during stellar flares, which extends to a distance of about 400 AU. In 2010 observations, a weak magnetic field was detected on the surface of Betelgeuse, with the form of dynamo, generated by the massive movements of convection. Something that was already suspected since the year 2002, on the basis of computer simulation models.

It has a declination of +7º and it is located at the degree 28º of Gemini (-16º de latitud celeste).

Its original name derives from the Arabic الجوزا يد yad-jawzā, which means 'the hand of Jauza'. During Middle Ages, when the name of the star was transcribed to latin, it became "Bedalgeuze". During the Renaissance, it is thought that its original name could have been "Bayt al-jauza", which in Arabic means "the shoulder of Jauza", which led to the current form: "Betelgeuse".

The quality of the star Betelgeuse reminds the planets Jupiter and Saturn. It is related with  the ability to initiate large-scale projects.

Alphecca [Alfa Coronae Borealis , alCrB, α CrB] is the brightest star in the constellation Corona Borealis (the Northern Crown), with a visual magnitude of +2,22. It is located at a distance of 75 light years from the solar system.

The traditional name of 'Alphecca' comes from the Arabic 'al-na'ir al-fakkah', which means 'the bright star of the broken ring'. In more recent times, it was also known as 'Gemma', which in Latin means 'gem' or 'jewel', whose possible etymological origin may be related to the term 'bud' (unopened flower, leaves of the floral crown). In China it was known as 貫 索 四 'Guàn Suǒ sì', which means 'the fourth star of coiled thong'.

Alphecca is a white main sequence dwarf star of spectral type A0 V, with a surface temperature of 9700 K. It has a rotation speed of 139 km/s.

It is a system formed by 2 components.

Photometric observations were carried out in the years June 1986, May 2003 and October 2002.

It is a giant orange star with a stellar classification of K2III and a surface temperature of 4489 K. It has a companion of magnitude +11.8.

Pollux was the inmortal brother of the Dioscuri, twin of Castor and brother of Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.

Pollux was famous for his skill in hand-to-hand fighting and Castor for his ability to tame and ride horses. When Theseus and Pirítoo kidnapped its sister Helena and took it to Afidna, the Dioscuros rescued it and kidnapped in revenge the mother of Teseo, Etra. They also accompanied Jason on the Argo. During the trip, Pollux killed the Atmic king in a fair play hand fight. When Astidamia, queen of Yolco, offended Peleus, the Dioscuri helped him to devastate his country. Pollux is a orange giant star of spectral classificaction of K0IIIb, with a surface temperature of 4666 K. It is located at a distance of 33.7 light years from the solar system. It is the orange giant closest to the solar system, although its luminosity is low compared to other nearby giants, such as Arturo or Menkent.

Thestias, discovered in June 2006, although its existence was suspected since 1993, is a planet that orbits Pollux (it is the brightest star to which an extrasolar planet has been discovered). It has an approximate mass of 2.9 times that of Jupiter and describes an almost circular orbit at 1.64 AU of Pollux. 

Photometric observations were made in December 1993, January 2005, September 2009, July 2012 and July 2014.

On rare occasions Pollux can be occulted by the Moon.

It is located at the longitude 112.9º (22º54' Cancer; semioctile 112º30', 0º24' orb), and latitude   6.7º ( 6º41' Aries).

Wasat [Delta Geminorum, deGem, δ Gem] is the 8th brightest star in the constellation Gemini (the Twins), with a visual magnitude of +3,50. It is located at a distance of 60 light years from the solar system.

The traditional name of Wasat comes from the Arab 'Al Wasat', which means 'in the middle'. In China it was known as 'Ta Tsun', which means 'the big jar of wine'.​

Wasat is white subgiant of spectral type F0 IV and with a surface temperature of 6900 K. It has a size 1.5 times that of the Sun and a fast rotation speed (129 km/s).

Wasat is a stereoscopic binary, whose components are separated from each other by 3.6 AU. A third component of spectral type K6V and supercifial temperature of 4500K, orbits every 1200 years at a distance of about 100 AU.

Its proximity to the ecliptic (-0.2º) causes it to be occasionally hidden by the Moon. In the year 1857 it was hidden by the planet Saturn. Pluto was discovered when it was very close to Wasat. Jupiter passed very close in December of 2013.

It is located in the longitude 108.8º (18º48' Cancer), and latitude 0.2º ( 0º10' Aries; conjunction, 0º10' orb).

Castor [Alfa Geminorum, alGem, α Gem] is the second brightest star in the constellation Gemini (The Twins). It is a white star of spectral type A1 V, with a surface temperature of 9500 K and a luminosity 37 times greater than that of the Sun. It has a visual magnitude of +1.98 and is located at 51 light years from the Solar System.

Castor is a visual binary star whose components, Castor A and Castor B, complete an orbit every 445 years (104 AU = 71-138 AU). The orbital plane is inclined 25º respect to the line of sight. In turn, each of the components is a spectroscopic binary: the components of Castor A are separated 0.12 AU with an orbital period of 9.21 days, while the components of Castor B, separated 0.03 AU, complete one orbit every 2.93 days (2.4 and 1.9 solar masses). The companions of these two white stars, can be red dwarfs, whose magnetic activity causes the emission of X-rays.

In addition, two other stars, are part of this sextuple system. Castor C is an eclipsing spectroscopic binary, located about 72 seconds of arc, whose components move in a circular orbit with a separation of 0.018 AU, completing one turn every 19.5 hours. The distance between Castor C and the pair Castor AB is so great (about 1000 AU) that no orbital movement has yet been observed.

Photometric observations were made in April of 1974 and May of 2003, in addition to the years 1678, 1718, 1998 and 2002.

It has a declination of +32º (oncile) and it is located at the degree 20º of Cancer (+10º of celestial latitude).

Sulafat [Gamma Lyrae, gaLyr, γ Lyr] is the 2nd brightest star in the constellation Lyra (the Lyre), with a visual magnitude of +3,25. It is located at a distance of about 620 light years from the solar system.

The traditional name Sulafat is derived from the Arabic السلحفاة 'Al-Sulḥafāt', which means 'tortoise'. It was also known as 'Jugum', which in Latin means 'yoke' (piece of wood that joins two oxen and the plow rudder).

Sulafat is a giant blue-white star with a B9 III spectral classification, with a surface temperature of 10080 K. It has a radius 15 times greater than the Sun.

Photometric observations were carried out in the year 1909, April 1986 and June 2001.

It is located in the longitude 292.2º (22º11' Capricorn; golden aspect 68º75', 0º56' orb; (tri)semioctile 67º30', 0º19' orb), and latitude  55.0º (25º 0' Taurus; (bi)trecile@55º23', 0º23' orb).

Sulafat is a star that reminds the planet Venus and the object (88611) Teharonhiawako (Kuiper belt). It is related with a great ability to compose music, especially using computer tools, due to its mathematical and temporal capacity (declination in oncile aspect).

Enif [Epsilon Pegasi, epPeg, ε Peg] is the brightest star in the constellation Pegasus (The Winged Horse), with a visual magnitude of +2.38.

The name Enif derives from the Arabic word al-anf, "the nose", for its position within the constellation in which the snout of the winged horse is located.

The star Enif is an orange supergiant of spectral type K2Ib in the final stages of its stellar evolution, in which it will explode as a supernova or become a white dwarf of the rare neon-oxygen type. It is located at a distance of approximately 670 light years. Its brightness is equivalent to 6700 times the Sun and its radius is approximately 150 times larger than the solar radius. It has been observed that this star increases in brightness in a short period of time, it can be due to gigant eruptions or flares. It has a radial velocity of 21.6 km/s, relatively high.

Photometric observations were made in June 1987 and February 2012.

It is located in the longitude 331.6º (1º33' Pisces, trecile@27º42', orb 0º45 ', (bi) quinvigintile@28º48', orb 0º21 '), and latitude 22.1º (22º 6' Aries, semioctile 22º30 ', orb 0º24').

The name Giausar is derived from 'Ghāuzar', which in Persian means 'The Tail of the Dragon', name with which the South Node of the Moon is also known (the point at which the Moon crosses the ecliptic towards the south).

Bellatrix, a blue supergiant of B2III spectral type, is one of the visible star by naked eye with a higher surface temperature, about 21,500 K. Its luminosity, including a significant amount of radiation emitted in the ultraviolet, is 6400 times greater than the Solar. Its current diameter is 5.7 times greater than solar, but within a few million years it will become an orange supergiant star. It is 240 light years from the Solar System.

In 1963, Bellatrix began to be used as a reference system to measure the magnitude of other stars; also in 1971, to measure B2III spectral types. The traditional name Rastaban is derived from the Arabic 'Al Rās al Thu'bān', which means 'the head of the dragon'. It was also known as 'Alwaid', which means 'the one who is going to be destroyed'.

Rastaban is a bright yellow giant star of spectral type G2 II, with a surface temperature of 5160 K. It has a size about 40 times larger than the Sun and emits a luminosity 950 times higher. It has a companion, whose orbital period is about 4000 years.
