Thuban [Alfa Draconis, alDra, α Dra] is the 7th brightest star in the constellation Draco (the Dragon), with a visual magnitude of +3,67. It is located at a distance of 303 light years from the solar system.

The traditional name 'Thuban' derives from the Arabic word ثعبان 'thu'bān', meaning 'dragon or large snake'.

Thuban is a white bright gigant star of spectral type AO III, with a surface temperature of 10100 K.

It is a system formed by 2 components.

Photometric observations were carried out in the years 2004, 2009 and 2016.

It is a semiregular variable star, with a period of about 1100 days. Its luminosity is 834 times the Solar, with a surface temperature of 3958 K. Its visual magnitude of +3.82 and is located at 333 light years from the Solar System.

It is a red giant that in the future will become a white dwarf.

Photometric observations were carried out in January and February 2005 and in the year 1992.

It has a declination of +69º (between golden aspect and quintile) and it is located at the degree 9º of Leo (+57º of celestial latitude).

The name Giausar is derived from 'Ghāuzar', which in Persian means 'The Tail of the Dragon', name with which the South Node of the Moon is also known (the point at which the Moon crosses the ecliptic towards the south).

The star Giausar reminds the Lunar Nodes. It is related with an amazing ability to apply in practice what has been learned, like in the movie "Flight of the Phoenix" (2004).

The traditional name Rastaban is derived from the Arabic 'Al Rās al Thu'bān', which means 'the head of the dragon'. It was also known as 'Alwaid', which means 'the one who is going to be destroyed'.

Rastaban is a bright yellow giant star of spectral type G2 II, with a surface temperature of 5160 K. It has a size about 40 times larger than the Sun and emits a luminosity 950 times higher. It has a companion, whose orbital period is about 4000 years.

Eltanin [Gamma Draconis, gaDra, γ Dra] is the brightest star in the constellation of the Dragon. It is a giant orange, located in the head of the constellation. Has an apparent magnitude of +2,24 and it is located at 148 light-years away from the Solar System, but it comes toward us; so that, within 1.5 million years ago, it will be just 28 light years far and then it will be, along with Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Its radius is 50 times larger than that of the Sun and its luminosity is 600 times greater than that of the Sun.

In 1728, James Bradley, while trying to measure the parallax of this star, discovered the aberration of light caused by the speed of the motion of the Earth in relation to the speed of light coming from the stars. This discovery proved the Copernican theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

It has a declination of +51º (septile) and it is located at the degree 27º of Sagittarius (+75º of celestial latitude).

The name Eltanin comes from Arabic Al Rās al Tinnīn, whose meaning is "snake".
